There’s no secret that Mahindra is extensively testing the 5-door version of the Thar off-roader. In a recent video, we see the top of the 5-door Thar. Although the test mule is under heavy camouflage, there’s something exciting happening on the roof. We know that the 3-door new Mahindra Thar has a relatively flat roof, But the 5-door version seems to have a roof that resembles the previous generation Scorpio. The taller rear section of the roof is possibly a design meant to give rear passengers more headroom. As of now, we understand there’s no sunroof on offer.
5-Door Thar Is More Practical
On the inside of the 5-door Thar, we will get to see two rows of seating. The front row will have captain seats and a bench seat capable of fitting three people in the second row. The additional set of doors for the second row will make getting in and out of the 5-door Thar a lot easier. In fact, this should be a major selling point. Many buyers have put off the 3-door Thar only because it’s not practical as a family car. Luggage space will also increase with the 5-door model.
What Can We Expect?
The 5-door Thar most likely uses the same petrol and diesel engines. But, we assume Mahindra will work on and give a different map. Thus we could uprate power and torque outputs with the 5-door versions.
Sources say 5-door Thar will get the same tune as the Mahindra Scorpio. Thus, this translates to 172 Bhp-420 Nm for the 2.2 diesel engine’s manual variant. And 172 Bhp-450 Nm for the automatic variant. The 2-litre turbo petrol motor on the 5-door Thar will most likely make 197 Bhp of peak power and 380 Nm of peak torque on the automatic variant. We could very well see both 6-speed manual and automatic gearbox options. We understand a four-wheel drive layout with low and high ranges would come in as a standard fitment across all trims.
