5-door Mahindra Thar SUV spotted road testing

Written by Rohit Tonapi

After the massive success of the 3-door version of the Thar, Mahindra plans to replicate the same success with a new 5-door version of the SUV. Launched as a 3-door SUV, there have been speculations about the launch of a 5-door version since the beginning. And now, new spy shots have emerged, which show the 5-door Thar’s test mule. Though there is no confirmation as to when Mahindra will launch the 5-door Thar, it could likely happen next year.

The 5-door Thar is not the only SUV heading to the market. Recently, spy shots of Force Gurkha 5-door have also emerged. Additionally, Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch the Jimny 5-door in India. Both the Gurkha and Jimny will likely be launched in 2023.

5-Door Mahindra Thar Spotted – What Do We See?

Mahindra will use a slightly modified body-on-frame chassis for the 5-door version of the Thar to accommodate the longer body. To comfortably accommodate the rear doors, Mahindra will also increase the wheelbase. However, the front and rear wheel tracks and width will be identical to the 3-door Thar. Due to the camouflage, the tailgate is not clearly visible. Hence, it is unclear if the 5-door Thar will get a split tailgate, like the 3-door Thar or a conventional one.

The increase in wheelbase means the 5-door Thar will lose some of its off-road capabilities. Though the approach and departure angle may remain almost similar, the increased wheelbase will result in a lower ramp-over angle.

5-Door Mahindra Thar – What Do We Know?

Mahindra will offer the 5-door Thar with a third-row of seats. Thus, it will have a seating capacity of either 6 or 7. However, there is no confirmation about the seating layout so far. In terms of features, expect it to be similar to the 3-door version. However, Mahindra could add some additional features such as rear AC vents and a sunroof.

When it makes its way to the showrooms, expect it to command a premium of INR 1 lakh to INR 2 lakh over the 3-door version. This largely depends on what features Mahindra adds to the 5-door version. The model could make its global debut at the upcoming 2023 Auto Expo in January 2023.

For a lower entry price point and to cater to those who don’t need a 4×4, Mahindra is also developing a 4×2 variant of the 3-door version. Powering the 4×2 version could be the 1.5-litre mHawk diesel. There are chances Mahindra could offer the same engine and 4×2 on the lower variants of the 5-door Thar. The higher variants will get the 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre mHawk turbo-diesel as the 3-door version.
