Written by Rohit Tonapi

Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) has announced the crash ratings for the Toyota Urban Cruiser compact SUV for the Indian market. Under the #SaferCarsForIndia initiative, the charitable institution continues to test cars on sale in India. The institution has revealed that Toyota Urban Cruiser has received 4-stars for Adult Protection and 3-stars for Child Occupant Protection. The compact SUV scored 13.52 out of 17 for Adult Occupant Protection and 36.68 out of a possible 49 points for Child Occupant Protection. Notably, the Toyota Urban Cruiser scored better than the car it shares its platform with, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza.

Toyota Urban Cruiser – Adult Occupant Protection

Global NCAP states that the car’s protection offered to the driver’s and passenger’s heads and neck was good. The vehicle showed adequate protection to the driver’s chest and good protection for the passenger’s chest. As for knees, Global NCAP stated that both the driver’s knees and passenger’s right knee showed marginal protection as they could impact with dangerous structures behind the dashboard supported by the Tranfascia tube. Still, the passenger’s left knee showed good protection.

The driver’s tibias showed adequate protection, and the passenger’s tibia showed good protection. The compact SUV’s bodyshell gets rated as stable, and it was capable of withstanding further loadings. The footwell area also gets rated as stable. The car offers SBR as a standard for the driver and the passenger.

Toyota Urban Cruiser – Child Occupant Protection

It is important to note that the Toyota Urban Cruiser offers ISOFIX anchorages as standard. Hence, the child seat for the 3-year old was installed Forward Facing (FWF) using the ISOFIX anchorages and TT and could prevent excessive forward movement of the head. Furthermore, it offered low protection to the neck and fair protection to the chest. The 1.5-year old was installed using Rearward Facing (RWF) with the ISOFIX anchorages, and it supported the leg while also offering good protection to the head and chest.

The CRS marking was permanent, while the recommended CRSs did not show incompatibility. The vehicle provides a lap belt in the rear centre position, not a three-point seat belt. All the above factors led to a 3-star rating for child occupant protection.
