Mahindra recently revealed its first all-electric offering in India, the XUV400. The brand's first EV SUV will go on sale in January 2023. The XUV400 uses the ICE-powered XUV300 as its base. Besides the obvious powertrain differences between the two, there are many others as well. In this comparison, we tell you what's the difference between the two SUVs from Mahindra so you can decide which is the right SUV for you. Mahindra XUV400 Vs. XUV300 - Exterior The first notable difference between the two is the size. Unlike its ICE-powered sibling, the XUV400 is not a sub-4m SUV. In fact, with its 4.2-metre length, it is much longer. Mahindra derived the XUV300 from the Ssangyong Tivoli. However, for the Indian market, Mahindra downsized it to keep it under 4-metre in length. The reason for this was simple, to avail tax benefits and help them price it more competitively. However, there are no such length-based tax benefits for EVs. Thus, Mahindra decided to use the 4.2-metre length of the Tivoli for the electric SUV. The XUV400 measures 205mm more in length than the XUV300. This also results in larger boot space. The XUV400 gets a 378-litre boot, which is 121-litre bigger than that of the XUV300. Mahindra didn't stop there. The brand also made a host of changes to the styling of the XUV400 to set it apart from the XUV300. The most notable one is at the rear. The XUV400 gets a clear lens for the taillights as well as a reprofiled tailgate. The added length also makes it look more proportionate from the sides. Meanwhile, at the front, the most notable difference is the grille or lack of it. The XUV400 features a new bumper design, a blanked-out grille with X-pattern and a new copper-coloured logo. There is a lot of other copper-coloured detailing as well. Additionally, while the headlights remain the same, there is a small difference. The XUV400's LED DRLs don't extend into the bumper, like with the XUV300. Mahindra XUV400 Vs. XUV300 - Interior On the inside, the changes are not as drastic as on the outside. The XUV400 continues with exactly the same layout as the XUV300. However, the main difference is that the all-electric XUV400 gets an all-black interior. In comparison, the XUV300 gets dual-tone beige and black interior. The copper-coloured theme of the XUV400 continues on the inside as well. It gets copper-finished surrounds for the volume and aircon control knobs, air vents, gear lever surrounds and a copper-coloured Twin-Peaks logo on the steering wheel. Additionally, the XUV400 also gets blue accents on the buttons as well as blue-coloured stitching on the seats. Meanwhile, the XUV400 continues to sport an analogue instrument cluster like the XUV300. However, expectedly, it gets EV-specific details. Mahindra XUV400 Vs. XUV300 - Technical Differences Despite all the exterior and interior differences, the biggest one is what powers them. Powering the XUV400 is an electric motor on the front axle that makes 150 HP of power and 310 Nm of torque. All this power and torque comes from a 39.2 kWh battery pack. On the other hand, the XUV300 is available with either a diesel or petrol engine. The diesel engine puts out 117 HP, while the 1.2-litre petrol unit puts out 110 HP.
