Maserati has revealed teaser images of its upcoming car. The GranCabrio is nothing but the convertible version of the GranTurismo, which is also currently under development.
Design of the Maserati GranCabrio
The car in the images gets four exhaust tips – two on each side. This means that Maserati could offer the car a choice of a V6 engine or its new fully-electric powertrain. Maserati calls this new all-electric powertrain the Folgore.
In terms of design, the GranCabrio carries the design over from the GranTurismo. It gets the new design headlamps and a wide front grille. The car is similar in overall shape compared to the outgoing model. The released images were taken at night, which don’t reveal many details. Further, the car is also wrapped in a camouflage wrap, making it challenging to identify the design lines on the body.
Maserati has set an ambitious target of offering only electric cars from 2030. To that extent, the GranTurismo and GranCabrio are the first cars in the brand to get a fully-electric powertrain. Since the carmaker is in the transition phase, these models are also going to be offered with an internal combustion engine (ICE). Hence, these are not built upon an EV-specific platform as such.
Powertrain options of the Maserati GranCabrio
Details about this new Folgore system have yet to be discovered, but being a sports car manufacturer, one can expect good performance from the EV. One thing to note is how Maserati has managed to fit both the EV and the ICE powertrains in the same space. Currently, there aren’t any electric, convertible sports cars in the market. Hence, it is difficult to gauge the performance of GranCabrio.
The GranCabrio could also get a three-motor setup, as hinted for the GranTurismo. This means it will get an all-wheel drive system with a total power output of close to 740 HP. The GranCabrio is also expected to be slightly less stiff than the GranTurismo as the car has no roof.
Launch details of the Maserati GranCabrio
That said, it is going to be interesting to compare the ICE and EV version of the same car, that too, from a performance car manufacturer. The launch of the GranCabrio is scheduled for next year. The prototype cars are under testing on the road, on the track and in various usage conditions before gathering data for the final tune.
