Japanese automotive giant Honda has revealed the crash safety test score of its 4th generation City conducted at Global NCAP. The midsize premium sedan managed to score a 4-star rating in the Adult Occupation Protection (AOP) department of the test. The test vehicle in question is the facelifted version of the 4th-gen Honda City that debuted in India in 2017. Honda continues to sell the 4th-gen facelifted version alongside the 5th-gen City, priced at INR 9,29,900 (ex-showroom).
About the Global NCAP and the 4-Star Safety Rating
Global NCAP or the Global New Car Assessment Programme is a UK-registered charity project of the Towards Zero Foundation. Established in 2011, the programme aims to promote the safety of cars by crash testing them and providing valuable information. The Global NCAP’s efforts under the #SaferCarsForIndia initiative led to several OEMs doubling the safety quotient of their vehicles. Global NCAP’s crash safety information will also raise awareness for safer roads in India due to numerous accidents and mishaps.
Like many other OEMs in India, Honda has also ensured to focus on the safety aspect of their vehicles. The 4th-gen Honda City’s 4-star rating proves that despite the car completing 5 years, it still showcases its safety. This rating will also provide relief to potential customers in India who still wish to own the midsize sedan. Honda currently offers the 4th-gen facelifted City in 2 trim options – SV and V with a 1.5-litre petrol engine.
The Adult Occupation Protection & Child Occupant Protection results
In the AOP department of Global NCAP, the 4th-gen City’s kept the driver’s and passenger’s head and neck in good condition. Meanwhile, the chest protection for the driver and co-passengers during the crash test showcases marginal and adequate conditions, respectively. However, the driver’s and passenger’s knees showed marginal protection as they could impact dangerous structures behind the sedan’s dashboard. Overall, Global NCAP rated the bodyshell and the footwell as unstable since they are not capable of withstanding further loadings.
When it comes to the COP department, the 4th-gen Honda City scored an impressive 4 stars out of 5. Honda used its original JSSJ NEO dummies to represent the 18-month old child and the 3-year old child for the test. With ISOFIX anchors for both dummies, the child seat for the 3-year old provided good head and chest protection. Meanwhile, the child seat for the 18-month old provided good protection to the chest and head with permanent CRS markings.
