Milan-headquartered multinational tyre company Pirelli has become the first tyre-producer in the world to manufacture FSC-certified (Forest Stewardship Council) tyres. Pirelli is designing the new P Zero tyres containing FSC-certified natural rubber and rayon for the BMW X5 xDrive45e Plug-in-Hybrid. The new tyre production technology using natural rubber further widen the horizon for sustainable tyre production.
FSC forest management certification
The FSC forest management certification confirms that Pirelli is preserving the biological diversity by managing the plantations, where the brand sources its rubber. The brand is also ensuring economic viability and benefitting the lives of local people and workers. The FSC chain of custody certification also verifies that FSC-certified material and separates it from non-certified material. This process ensures that the non-certified material does not make its way from the plantations to the tyre manufacturer.

Pirelli has been working towards the sustainable management of the natural rubber supply chain for many years. The brand boasts that the certification for the natural rubber used to make the new P ZERO tyre is the latest step in the company’s path. Pirelli reveals that the training and sharing of good practices in the country of origin of the material are also in line with Pirelli Sustainable Natural Rubber Policy.
