Yamaha makes a big move into the electric mobility segment. The motorcycle maker has revealed two of its upcoming electric two-wheelers. First on the fray that will soon hit the production, as well as dealerships, is Neo, which is an electric scooter. As we understand, this scooter will have similar characteristics to a 50cc petrol scooter. Yamaha Neo is already quite a popular nameplate, especially in the international market where it is sold as a petrol scooter. Neo electric scooter will get the underpinnings of the E02 concept that Yamaha unveiled at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.
What Do We Know So Far?
Yamaha has not revealed much detail as of yet. But, we understand the electric scooter will get a hub motor with an overall power output of 2kW. To help with the range, Yamaha will incorporate swappable battery technology. We do not have any official figure about the range rating of the Neo. What is understood is, this electric scooter will come with a very budget-friendly price tag. This will help attract more customers to join in and increase the sales in the much flourishing electric scooter segment.
The Road Ahead
The E02 will make its way into a lot of other Yamaha electric scooters in the near future. One such scooter is already in the talks, which is the Yamaha E01. This is a more powerful offering and will compete against 125-cc ICE petrol scooters. As per talks, E01 will start off as part of a ride-sharing fleet in one of Europe’s capital cities. This will allow Yamaha to monitor the real-world mileage and other functionalities.
Furthermore, Yamaha will then fine-tune the shortcomings and bring in a much better product for the customers. The E01 will most likely come with three riding modes, namely, Eco, Normal and Power. Keeping with the European regulations, E01 will have a power output of 15 hp, thus being eligible as a light electric scooter.
