Written by Kanad Kalasur

The Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP) has released crash test ratings for cars sold in India. These tests are part of the Safer Cars for India Initiative. Today we will be looking at the Maruti Suzuki Swift. The popular hatchback scored a single star each in the adult and child occupant tests.

Maruti Suzuki Swift Adult Occupant Protection Result

In the front impact tests, both the driver’s and passenger’s head and neck were rated as good. The driver’s chest was rated as weak protection while the passenger’s was rated as adequate. The driver’s and passenger’s right knees had marginal protection due to presence of dangerous structures behind the fascia. The footwell area was rated as unstable. Further, the bodyshell was rated as unstable and wasn’t capable of further loading.

In the side impact test, the head, abdomen and pelvis protection was good while the chest was rated as poor. In the side pole test, the test was not conducted as the car didn’t offer side head protection even as an option.

Maruti Suzuki Swift Child Occupant Protection Result

The 3-year old child seat was installed facing forward with ISOFIX and top tether. It prevented excessive forward movement during the forward impact and showed good protection to the head and marginal protection for the chest. The 18-month dummy too was installed with forward seats but it showed poor protection for head and chest.

The front passenger airbag can’t be turned off hence no child seat can be installed in the front passenger seat.
