Key highlights
- Maruti Suzuki has delayed eVitara deliveries until September 2025 due to battery supply and software issues.
- The electric SUV will be produced at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant, with a majority of units earmarked for export.
- The eVitara will feature two battery options—49 kWh and 61 kWh—competing with the Hyundai Creta EV and Tata Curvv EV.
Maruti Suzuki’s highly anticipated eVitara has hit another roadblock, with deliveries now postponed until September 2025. The electric SUV was initially expected to go on sale in March 2025, following its debut at Auto Expo 2025. However, ongoing battery supply and software challenges have forced the automaker to push back production.
eVitara production and export strategy
The eVitara will be manufactured at Suzuki’s Gujarat facility, which has been designated as the production hub for Maruti’s EV lineup. Interestingly, a majority of the units produced this year will be exported, with Japan and Europe being key markets. Maruti Suzuki Chairman R.C. Bhargava confirmed that 70,000 units are expected to roll out in the first production cycle, with domestic allocations being significantly lower.
Battery and powertrain options
The eVitara will be offered with two battery pack options—49 kWh and 61 kWh. The India-spec model will feature a single electric motor, while export variants will get a dual-motor AWD setup. The SUV is expected to deliver a range of approximately 500 km, making it a strong contender against the Hyundai Creta EV, Mahindra BE 6, Tata Curvv EV, and MG ZS EV.
eVitara pricing and market position
Maruti Suzuki has yet to officially announce pricing, but estimates suggest the eVitara will fall within the INR 20 lakh to INR 30 lakh range (ex-showroom). This positions it directly against mid-size electric SUVs, offering buyers a premium yet affordable EV option.
Impact on Toyota Urban Cruiser EV
The delay in eVitara deliveries has also raised concerns about the timeline for Toyota’s Urban Cruiser EV, which shares its platform with the Maruti model. Toyota had planned to launch its version shortly after the eVitara, but the revised production schedule may push its debut further into late 2025 or early 2026.
