Maruti Suzuki launched the Ciaz facelift in 2018. While the updated model got an all-new 1.5L petrol motor, the diesel motor was the familiar 1.3L Fiat-sourced block. However, we’ve been aware that Maruti Suzuki has been developing a new 1.5L diesel engine, and more details about the same have now leaked on the internet.
This all-new, in-house developed 1.5L turbocharged diesel motor is now ready to make it to mass market production on passenger cars. It is being said that the Ciaz will be the first car to get this engine.
This 1.5L engine, precisely 1,498cc, 4-cylinder, motor will be called DDiS 225. This engine will not get SHVS initially, like we’ve seen on the current 1.3L motor. This engine will produce 94 BHP of power @ 4000 RPM and 225 Nm of torque between 1500 – 2500 RPM. Engine will be matched to a 6-speed gearbox and there will be a dual mass flywheel in place. Fuel efficiency is being claimed at 26.82 kmpl.
Now compared to the 1.3L engine which produces 89 BHP & 200 Nm, this 1.5L motor is not really bringing in a lot of power and torque benefits. Nevertheless, every increase here and there counts. This all-new motor will be BSVI compliant, so this is really a future ready diesel engine.
Maruti Suzuki is rumoured to phase out the 1.3L diesel engine by 2020, and they will not upgrade it to BSVI regulations. This all-new 1.5L diesel motor will then be used in a range of Maruti Suzuki cars.
