Key highlights

  • Maruti Suzuki confirms that all its cars will feature six airbags as standard by the end of 2025.
  • The update will apply to models sold through both Arena and Nexa dealerships.
  • Prices for entry-level variants of affected models are expected to rise due to the added safety features.

Maruti Suzuki has announced a major safety upgrade across its entire lineup, confirming that all its cars will feature six airbags as standard by the end of 2025. The move aligns with the Indian government’s push for improved vehicle safety and follows growing consumer demand for enhanced protection in mass-market cars.

Which models are affected?

Currently, several Maruti models, including the Alto K10, Wagon R, Celerio, Swift, and Dzire, already offer six airbags as standard. However, models like the Baleno, Fronx, Ignis, Ertiga, XL6, and S-Presso only feature six airbags on higher trims. With this update, even the base variants of these models will receive the additional airbags, improving safety across the board.

Price impact for Maruti and market strategy

While the safety upgrade is a welcome change, it is expected to increase prices for entry-level trims. The Celerio, for instance, saw a price hike of INR 32,500 when it received six airbags earlier this year. Similar adjustments are likely for the Ertiga, XL6, Ignis, and S-Presso, which will now comply with the new safety standard. Maruti Suzuki Chairman R.C. Bhargava acknowledged the cost implications but emphasized the importance of safety improvements.

Maruti safety ratings and consumer response

Maruti’s decision comes amid concerns about its safety ratings. While the new-generation Dzire recently secured a five-star Global NCAP rating, several models, including the Alto K10, Wagon R, and S-Presso, received poor safety scores. The addition of six airbags could help improve the brand’s image and reassure buyers about its commitment to safety.

Industry trends and competitive move

The Indian automotive market has seen a growing emphasis on safety, with brands like Hyundai, Tata, and Mahindra already offering six airbags in many of their models. Maruti’s decision to standardize this feature across its lineup reflects a broader industry shift toward safer, more secure vehicles
