Mahindra XUV 500 with BSVI engine starts road testing

Written by Nizam Shaikh

The Mahindra XUV500 has been recently spotted testing with a new BSVI engine, as seen on the fuel filler lid of the spied car. A few days ago the XUV300 sub-4-metre SUV was also spied with a BSVI compliant motor and had a similar BSVI sticker on the fuel filler lid. The XUV500 had a ‘BSVI-D’ sticker, and the suffix ‘D’ we believe stands for the diesel variant.

The BSVI emission norms will be enforced from 1st of April 2020 and all the carmakers have now started to test their updated engines to conform with the strict norms. Maruti Suzuki already has introduced their BSVI updated petrol engines on their small entry-level hatchback, Alto 800.

The test car seen in the spy shots is likely to have the new 2.0-litre diesel engine which will replace the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine.

The current Mahindra XUV500 is powered by two BSIV compliant engine variants. The specifications are as follows:-

  • 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine with a 6th generation electronically controlled variable geometry turbocharger (eVGT) that produce 155 HP of power and 360 Nm of torque coupled to a 6-speed synchromesh manual transmission.
  • 2.2-litre mHawk turbocharged petrol engine which produces 140 HP of power and 320 Nm of torque coupled to a 6-speed transmission.

The brakes are on all four wheels and are hydraulically operated discs with ventilated discs on the front. The exterior dimensions measure 4585mm in length, 1890mm in width, 1785mm in height and a wheelbase of 2700mm and the vehicle weighs 2510 kg (gross) and has a 70-litre fuel tank capacity. The suspension duties on the Mahindra XUV500 are performed by independent McPherson type with anti-roll bar on the front and a multi-link with anti-roll bar on the rear.

The new 2.0-litre engine is expected to replace the 2.2-litre diesel engine and the BSIV 2.2-litre engine will be phased out by March 2020 before the BSVI roll-out.

Mahindra launched a new entry-level ‘W3’ model on the XUV500 recently. The XUV500 W3 variant is now available at all Mahindra dealerships in India and is priced at INR 12.30 ex-showroom, Delhi. While the old entry-level model, the W5 is priced at INR 12.89 lakh ex-showroom, Delhi.
