Volkswagen Polo & Vento production could end by mid-2022

Written by Nizam Shaikh

Volkswagen has had more than a decade long stint with the Polo and Vento in the Indian market. The brand has upgraded the cars through their journey in India, but rumours suggest that by mid-2022, the German brand is likely to end production on both the Polo and Vento in India. Later in 2022, Volkswagen could bring the new-generation Polo and Vento based on the MQB-A0-IN platform. Sources report that Volkswagen is likely to have a major shuffle in their portfolio by axing the Polo and replacing the Vento with a new mid-size sedan.

Polo and Vento End-of-Production

Volkswagen could be planning to stop production of the Polo and Vento in Q2 of 2022. At the same time, the brand could stop accepting bookings for the Polo by June this year. The bookings on Vento are likely to be stopped by May. Volkswagen was first launched in the Indian market in 2009, and the brand has sold more than 14 million units worldwide. The Vento, which is a sedan version of the popular Polo hatchback, was launched in 2010 and is equally popular.

Polo and Vento Replacement

Volkswagen could introduce the new-generation Polo in the Indian market later in 2022. The new Polo is likely to be based on the highly localised MQB-Ao-IN platform. However, the 7th generation Polo is likely to come with a lot of modifications to meet the sub4-metre tax laws. The new Polo could come with premium features such as Matrix LED headlamps, IQ. Drive Travel Assist, virtual cockpit instruments cluster and the latest generation telematics.

The Vento, however, is likely to be replaced by the new mid-size Virtus sedan. The Virtus will also underpin the MQB-A0-IN platform and is likely to share the same body panels from the Skoda Slavia but come with redesigned wheels. The brand will be revealing the Volkswagen Virtus on 8th March 2022, with its launch slated for May 2022.
