Tata Motors displayed their Altroz premium hatchback at the Geneva motor show in March 2019. The Tata Altroz was spotted at Tata’s manufacturing plant without any camouflage, which leads to believe that the car is production ready and may come soon to the Indian market.
The premium hatchback is based on the 45X concept, which was showcased in the 2018 Auto Expo and has not strayed much from the original design. It follows the manufacturers Impact Design 2.0 which is used on the Tata Harrier. The Altroz is based on Tata’s ALFA (Agile Light Flexible Advanced Architecture), a modern-day platform which is flexible enough to accommodate different body styles and engine types.
The engine powering the Altroz is believed to be a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, Revotron petrol engine with Multi-Drive mode producing 85 PS of power and 114 Nm of torque. And a 1.05-litre, 3-cylinder Revotorq diesel with Multi-Drive mode producing 70 PS of power and 140 Nm of torque coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox with an option of an automated manual transmission (AMT) could be sourced from the Tata Tiago. Another speculation is that Tata will use the more powerful Nexon’s 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol capable of producing 110 PS of power and 170 Nm of torque or a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel producing 110 PS of power and 260 Nm of torque mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed AMT gearbox. We think the Nexon engines will be used as it will provide the Altroz with unmatched performance in the segment.
The exterior features a sleek up-swept headlight design with LED daytime running lights a large front bumper and large silver alloy wheels. The interiors will feature a floating touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, climate control AC and an analogue + digital instrument cluster with digital MID. In terms of styling, the Tata Altroz does look good. And going by the value for money pricing on the recent cars, we are sure that the Altroz will also be a hit among mass market.
The Tata Altroz is likely to be priced at around INR 5.5 lakh to 9 lakh ex-showroom, India and will be launched around the festive season later this year. The Altroz will compete with the likes of the Honda Jazz (INR 7.45 lakh to 9.35 lakh), the Hyundai i20 (INR 5.50 to 9.30 lakh) and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno (INR 5.50 to 8.75 lakh).
