An image shared by Jürgen Stackmann, a member of the Volkswagens’s board reveals a new product which is being developed for emerging markets. Dubbed as the Volkswagen T-Sport, it would be a sub-4 metre compact-SUV with coupe-like styling to attract young urban buyers, on a tight budget. In the global line-up, the T-Sport will slot under the T-Cross SUV which we are going to get here in India. Only time will tell if under the leadership of Skoda in the India 2.0 vision if this T-Sport would come to India. It makes a business sense though as the Indian market loves SUVs in every size.
The T-Sport is expected to be revealed in 2020 and will first go on sale in the South American markets. The T-Sport will have a sloping rooflike mimicking a coupe and will look stylish enough to give a tough fight to cars like the Ford Ecosport, Honda WR-V & Hyundai Venue which are also global models. The car will be based on the cost effective MQB A0 platform which is also worked upon in India as MQB A0 IN for the new range of Skoda and Volkswagen cars.
The Volkswagen T-Sport SUV will share the same wheelbase of the new generation Polo which unfortunately doesn’t make it to the Indian market. With 2560mm of wheelbase, the T-Sport will be compact inside, but will pose as butch and stylish on the outside.
In India, Skoda and Volkswagen are working on multiple cars which will be launched in 2020. Skoda is preparing the Kamiq while Volkswagen will have the T-Cross which will fight it out in the mid-size SUV space to rival Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Nissan Kicks. So this also gives us a price reference of around INR 10-15 lakhs. The T-Cross from Volkswagen was also showcased as a convertible, but we doubt that would make it to the Indian showrooms, but we wish it does.
