Piaggio & Zongshen develop new 150cc scooter engine

Written by Akhil Dalvi

Italian two-wheeler manufacturer Piaggio has partnered with Chinese motorcycle manufacturer Zongshen to develop a new 150cc engine for its scooters. Reports suggest that both companies co-developed the engine for Asian and European markets and named it the ‘G150S’. The newly developed engine is liquid-cooled and produces 15 PS of power along with 15 Nm of torque.

Ensuring its modernity, the new engine showcases features such as an automatic start/stop system, keyless ignition, and silent start. In terms of construction, the new G150S engine features a new integral cylinder head, eccentric crankshaft, and a lightweight piston. Additionally, the engine also sports secondary oil filtration, roller rocker, and customization capabilities to suit different frames and rims.

Future Plans for the engine

Both companies believe that the modern features equipped on their new engine are becoming the new norm across two-wheelers globally. Meanwhile, neither Piaggio nor Zongshen has commented on the timeline of when they will begin production of the engine. However, reports suggest that Piaggio will incorporate the new engine in their upcoming scooters, which will launch in 2022.

Even though both companies will use the engine to power their upcoming two-wheelers, Piaggio won’t bring it to India. The reasoning behind the decision is that it will increase the price of its scooters drastically in the Indian market. In September 2021, Piaggio launched the Moto Guzzi V85TT in India and priced it at INR 15.4 lakh (ex-showroom).
