Mahindra Scorpio-N scores 5-Star in Global NCAP crash test

The new Mahindra Scorpio-N has been crash tested by the Global NCAP under the Safer cars for India initiative. The SUV has bagged a 5-star rating in adult occupant rating and a 3-stars for child occupants. This makes the Scorpio-N the first body-on-frame SUV to secure a 5-star rating in the update Global NCAP tests that came in to effect from July 2022.

Mahindra Scorpio-N Adult Protection

In the front impact test, both the driver’s and passenger’s head and neck were rated as good. The chest was rated as marginal for both the front occupants. When it comes to knee protection, both front occupants have good protection. The driver’s tibias were rated as adequate while the passenger’s were rated as adequate and marginal. Further, the bodyshell was rated as stable and was capable of further loading.

In the side impact tests, the head, chest, abdomen and pelvis were rated as good protection. In the side pole impact test, the curtain airbags met all the requirements and performed adequately. In the side airbag equipped version, the head, abdomen and pelvis were rated as good while the chest was rated as weak.

Mahindra Scorpio-N Child Protection

In the front impact tests, the child seat for the 3-year old dummy was installed in a rear facing format with the ISO-Fix points and a support leg. It was able to prevent head exposure and offered full protection. The child seat for the 18-month dummy was installed similarity and it too prevented head exposure and offered full protection.

In the side impact test, both the child seats offered complete side impact protection.

That said, the car doesn’t offer 3-point seat belts for all occupants. The front passenger airbag can be switched off for installing a child seat.

Mahindra’s Capacity Expansion

Mahindra has announced that it is ramping up production capacity for its popular SUVs. As part of this, the carmaker is targeting to produce around 6 lakh units per annum in the next 12-15 months. This is to reduce the massive waiting periods for its SUVs, which includes the likes of the Thar, XUV700, and Scorpio-N.

The Scorpio-N will see an increase in production from 10,000 units a month from the current 6,000.
