Kia India is already a household name in the Indian market. In a relatively much shorter time, the South Korean carmaker has gained enough followers in the country. With just four cars, namely Sonet, Seltos, Carnival and Carens, Kia is already in the top-5 car makers in the country. Its SUV offerings, Sonet and Seltos, are already blockbuster hits that help draw a significant number of customers to the showrooms. And now, with the Carens, they aim to repeat the feat. But, there’s more happening in Kia. As per the latest reports, the carmaker is taking a giant leap in the EV business. To kick start its electric mobility story, Kia is reportedly working on an electric SUV project.
Kia Electric SUV – What Is It?
As we understand, Kia is working to produce a mass-market electric SUV offering. This will mostly have its takers in the emerging markets, including India. We do not have any official announcement or timeline as of yet. But, sources say the car could hit the roads sometime in 2025. Before this, Kia will bring its globally successful EV6 to the Indian market. This will provide us with a glimpse of what is about to come from Kia in the electric segment. The work is on to build a proper EV infrastructure to support the customers with charging and other concerns. On the global stage, Kia aims to launch at least 14 electric vehicles by 2030.
When Will Electric Vehicles Dominate Sales?
EVs are not overtaking the sales of ICE counterparts any time soon, at least in India. Maruti Suzuki, the largest carmaker in the country, is still sceptical about the EV business in the country. And hence we don’t expect the Indian automotive market to gain much traction in the EV space without Maruti Suzuki entering the business. Well yes, the fact is true that Tata Motors is doing a lot and taking long strides in the EV space. Alongside Tata, Mahindra too looks promising with its plans. Thus, we wait to see how things plan out, and five years from now, we will have a better picture of the situation.
