Bugatti Chiron successor, new Tourbillon revealed producing 1800 HP

Bugati has revealed the iconic Chiron’s successor christened the Tourbillon. Back in 2016, the Bugatti Chiron was an engineering marvel with over 1500 Hp of power from its 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16 engine. But now after a 20 year stint from the Veyron to the Chiron the brand has now shelved the W16 motor.

Nomenclature

The new Bugatti which is called Tourbillon also does not follow the brand’s tradition of naming their core models after Bugatti Racing Car Drivers. The name reverbs with Bugatti’s French heritage and home in Molsheim. The brand also reveals that the tourbillon which is a watchmaking invention of a Swiss-born genius. lived in France back in 1801.

But Why Tourbillon?

However, the Tourbillon name sums up the character of the car and the way the cockpit falls into place, which both beautiful and complex at the same time. While many cars now come with the digital display for the instruments, the Tourbillon uses as many timeless components as possible so as to never age. The Bugatti Tourbillon’s cockpit features design and engineering techniques that will not be dated easily. The completely analogue instrument cluster is crafted by Swiss watchmakers with the same attention to detail is paid as if it is the world’s greatest timepiece. The cluster along with the car then just becomes an heirloom over generations, making a car for eternity.

Design

The Bugatti Tourbillon features the modern interpretation of the Bugatti’s “Shaped by Speed” design language. This also enables the Tourbillon to travel at more than 400 km/h. The high-speed requires every single surface of the car including the inlets and the ridges to be finely honed ensuring they not only comply with the aerodynamics but also the thermodynamics of the car. The design guides have evolved around four design elements – the horseshoe grille, the Bugatti Line, the central ridge and the dual colour split.

Tourbillon Instruments Cluster

On the inside, the Tourbillon features a timeless design philosophy. The interiors are inspired by the world of horologie, where wristwatches over 100 years old can still be worn and used today. The instruments cluster is made up of more than 600 parts. The cluster is constructed using titanium and gemstones such as Rubies & Sapphires. The skeletonised cluster is built to the highest tolerance of 50 microns and a minimum of 5 microns and weighs in at just 700 grams.

Powertrain

Powering the Bugatti Tourbillon is a 8.3-litre 90-degree V16 naturally-aspirated engine paired to an 800V 2x 250 kW dual motor that produces 3,000 Nm at the front axle. The rear axle also gets a 25 kW motor which can rev up to 24,000 rpms. Together the internal combustion engine and the electric motors produce 1,800 Hp of power matched to an 8-speed longitudinal DCT gearbox.
