Indian racing driver Arjun Maini has announced that he will join team HRT for the upcoming Asian Le Mans Series. For 2022, the team from Meuspath will utilise one Mercedes-AMG GT3 race car throughout all 4 of the series’ races. Drivers Hubert Haupt (GER), Arjun Maini (IND), and Rory Penttinen (FIN) will alternatively drive the #6, blue and yellow livery racecar. The first race of the Asian Le Mans Series season will begin on 12th February 2022 at the Dubai Autodrome.

Race Calendar & Season Details

The 2022 Asian Le Mans Series calendar consists of four races, with the opening weekend in Dubai (12th-13th February). During this weekend, all teams registered for the championship series will contest in two, four-hour-long races in Dubai. A week later (19th-20th February), the series will move to the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi for two four-hour races. This year’s championship will feature 37 cars in total, 23 of which will line up for the GT class.

For this season of the Asian Le Mans series, the teams will not just battle to earn the title. Instead, each class winner will get a starting place at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans as a reward. Finnish Driver Rory Penttinen has acquired a wealth of experience racing for team HRT whilst competing in the championship series. In 2021, Penttinen started every single race and eventually won the Team and Driver titles in the LMP3 class.

Goals for this season

Penttinen will share the cockpit with German team owner Hubert Haupt and the young Indian racer Arjun Maini. Racing in DTM during 2021, the 24-year old Indian racer will make his race debut for team HRT in Dubai. Haupt states that the series will grant them an opportunity to participate in the 2024 24 Hour Le Mans Series.

Meanwhile, Maini stated that he would capitalise on his previous Endurance racing experience in Asia and Europe for this season. Penttinen states that he aims to recreate last year’s victory in the LMP3 class for this year’s GT class. Managing Director of HRT, Ulrich Fritz, aims to achieve success for their first attempt in the Asian Le Mans Series.
