Ducati is recalling 5,909 units of several Ducati motorcycles in North America for ineffective braking. The Ducati motorcycle included in the recall includes the 2016-2020 XDiavel, 2017-2020 Monster 797, 2017-2020 Monster 1200, 2017-2020 Supersport, and 2018-2020 Monster 821 motorcycles.
What is the Recall for?
Ducati is recalling the lot, as air could permeate into the rear brake system leading to loss of brake pressure. This loss of applied brake pressure may lead to increased braking distance. The increased braking distance may cause the risk of a crash. Ducati estimates that 10% of the total recall population may have this defect. The recall population was based on consumer complaint records and review of warranty. According to the reports, the brake system architecture may have a greater susceptibility to excessive gas permeation, compared to other models.
Cause and Warning of Impending Loss of Brake Pressure
According to the brand, the fault can occur either due to the motorcycle being in storage for a long period or long periods of riding time without the application of pressure. Also, factors such as excessive gas permeation can contribute to the loss of pressure. It is also important to note that the front and rear brakes are hydraulically independent. Therefore, in any case, the performance of the front brake, which provides full stopping ability does not get hampered.
The issue in the rear brake system occurs gradually and gives the rider enough time and warning for the degrading performance. The rider will also be able to detect the fault during a pre-ride check as the pedal stroke will be increased drastically.
The Remedy
Ducati will replace the old hoses with new ones free of charge. Ducati will be sending owner notifications to owners from June 17, 2021. Owners can also file reimbursements with the brand according to Ducati’s general reimbursement plan on file. Ducati will also ask customers of the vehicle owners to bring their motorcycle to the nearest Ducati dealership for the replacement.
