Maharashtra has unveiled its EV Policy 2025, introducing toll-free travel for electric four-wheelers and buses on major highways. The policy, approved by the State Cabinet, aims to accelerate EV adoption and strengthen charging infrastructure across the state.

Toll-Free travel for EVs

Under the new policy, electric four-wheelers and buses will enjoy 100% toll exemption on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg, and Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu). Additionally, EVs traveling on state and national highways will receive a 50% toll discount.

Subsidies and incentives

The INR 1,993 crore budget allocated for the policy includes subsidies for EV buyers. Private electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers will receive a 10% discount on their base price, while electric goods carriers and tractors will get 15% off.

EV owners will also benefit from registration fee waivers and road tax exemptions, making electric mobility more affordable.

Charging infrastructure expansion

To address range anxiety, the policy mandates the installation of charging stations every 25 km on state and national highways. The government is also collaborating with oil marketing companies to set up EV chargers at petrol stations.

Market impact and future goals

Maharashtra ranks second in India for EV sales, accounting for 12.52% of total EV registrations in FY2025. The policy aims to increase EV adoption to 30% by 2030, reinforcing the state’s position as a leader in sustainable mobility.

Our Thoughts

Maharashtra’s toll-free policy is a game-changer. The charging station expansion is a much-needed step, and the subsidies make EVs more accessible. And let’s be honest—who wouldn’t want to skip toll fees while driving an electric car? Here’s hoping other states follow suit—because this is the kind of forward-thinking policy India needs!
