Yamaha planning NMax 155 maxi-scooter for India

Written by Rohit Tonapi

When Yamaha launched the Aerox 155 in the Indian market, it was quite a surprise. There were always rumours that Yamaha would launch a 155cc scooter in India. However, many expected Yamaha will bring the more traditional max-scooter, NMax 155. According to sources, the Chairman of Yamaha Motor India said the reason was a lack of options in the 150cc sports scooter segment. The company wanted to try something different in that space. Hence, it went ahead with the Aerox’s launch. The company wanted to gauge the customer response to the Aerox 155. After Aerox’s launch, Yamaha wanted to see if there was a demand for a more touring-friendly maxi-scooter with more luggage capacity.

Since the Aerox 155 is doing pretty well in the market, there’s a chance Yamaha could also bring the NMax to the market. As of now, the Aerox has found quite a fan following, and there is more demand than the company can supply. Another thing affecting the Aerox 155 is the dealership network, as it is available only through Yamaha’s premium Blue Square dealerships. However, Yamaha said it is working on making the Aerox available across all the dealerships. This would greatly increase the reach of the scooter. In addition to this, the company is also working to increase localisation. Additional localisation will not only help streamline the production but also lower the prices.

Yamaha NMax 155 – How Is It Different From Aerox 155?

Firstly, as the ‘155’ in the name suggests, both use the same engine. The R15-derived 155cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine makes 15 PS and 13.9 Nm of torque. Additionally, it also features Variable Valve Actuation (VVA). The VVA enables a broader torque spread. Thus, increasing the rideability of the scooters.

As for practicality, it has the same underseat storage capacity as the Aerox 155. However, there is an optional 39-litre top box available. Similar to the Aerox, the NMax also gets a step-through format and a prominent spine section. The NMax’s focus is more on urban commuting, unlike the Aerox. However, an area of concern about the NMax is the ground clearance. The NMax 155, depending on the market, orders a ground clearance between 125mm and 135mm. On the other hand, the Aerox, at 145mm, offers a bit more.

Another major difference is the wheel size. The Aerox 155 uses 14-inch wheels, while the NMax 155 gets 13-inch wheels. Hence, the NMax could have lighter steering and also be easier to manoeuvre. However, the 13-inch wheels will compromise its high-speed stability. The Aerox and NMax both come with 230mm front disc brakes. At the rear, the Aerox uses a drum brake. Unlike the Aerox, the NMax could also come with a rear disc brake. Hence, Yamaha could also offer dual-channel ABS.
