Tata Motors has announced that the Harrier and Safari SUVs have received a full 5-star rating at the BNCAP. The Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat-NCAP) tests vehicles and rates them for safety accordingly. It is also India’s very own and independent safety performance evaluation protocol. Now, BNCAP has revealed that both the Harrier and Safari have got 5-stars for adult occupant protection and child occupant protection.
According to the BNCAP fact sheet, the Tata Safari and Harrier get 30.02 points out of the maximum 32 points. In the frontal offset deformable barrier test the driver’s head and neck receive good protection. While protection to the torso of the driver is marginal. The right shin also shows only adequate protection while other parts of the body get good protection. The front passenger however fairs good protection on all parts of the body including head, neck, chest and legs.
In the side movable deformable barrier test and the side pole impact test good protection is offered to the driver. Talking about the points, the frontal offset deformable barrier test gets 14.08 points of the available 16 points. similarly in the side movable deformable barrier test the car receives a full 16 points out of the available 16 points, giving it a full 5-star rating in the Adult Occupation Protection test.
According to the BNCAP fact sheet, the Tata Safari and Harrier were assessed using a Child Restraint System in Dynamic Test. The Safari and Harrier with an 18-month-old child dummy and a 3-year-old child dummy using Joie i-Spin Safe Child Restraint System (CRS). In the Dynamic test both SUV scored 23.54 points out of the maximum 24 points. CRS installation score is a full 12 points and the vehicle assessment score is 9 out of 13 points. However, it is important to note that an integrated CRS is not available on both the SUVs. But, the cars come with ISOFIX points in the second row outboard seats as standard.
As standard, the Safari and Harrier come with frontal airbag, belt pretensioner, and belt load limiter. The SUVs also comes with side head curtain airbag and side chest airbag. The cars also comes with Electronic Stability Control conforming to UN GTR No.8, UNECE R140 and AIS-133 standards. Also, standard is pedestrian protection and a seat belt reminder.
