Australia and New Zealand’s vehicle safety body – The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) reveals that the Mahindra Scorpio-N received ‘0-Star’ rating in their crash testing. Mahindra introduced the Scorpio-N in Australia and New Zealand in April 2023 and August 2023, respectively. ANCAP has now published its official report on the safety rating of the popular SUV. According to the ANCAP report, the Mahindra Scorpio-N has received Zero Stars for safety. Below is the full technical report.
In the frontal offset collision test the passenger compartment is said to have been remained stable. Protection to the driver’s chest and lower legs is also adequate. Critical body regions of both the driver and front passenger is also good. An 8 point penalty was applied as the Mahindra Scorpio-N poses high risk to occupants of an oncoming vehicle.
In the full width frontal test, protection to the driver’s chest was weak but good for other areas. Based on the crash dummy readings protection to the rear passenger head, neck and chest was poor. Also, high seat belt loadings were detected.
In the side impact test protection to all critical parts of the driver’s body was recorded as good. But, the driver seatbelt was observed to unlatch during impact. This increases the potential risk of injury.
The oblique pole impact test reveals that marginal protection is offered to the driver’s chest. However, for other critical body regions the test reveals good protection. It is also important to note that a centre airbag is not available to prevent contact between the heads of front seat occupants in side impacts. Also, relevant technical evidence required to assess movement towards the other side of the vehicle was not provided by Mahindra, according to ANCAP.
Also, the Mahindra Scorpio-N attracts major penalties as it is not fitted with any form of autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system. The SUV also does not come with blind spot monitoring system (BSM), nor does it have lane support system (LSS). A driver monitoring system (DMS) is also not available on the Scorpio-N. Other tests that the ANCAP does is the Far Side Impact Test, Whiplash Protection and Rescue and Extrication test.
ANCAP tested the Mahindra Scorpio Z8L, right-hand driven vehicle with a 2.2-litre diesel engine. The SUV was equipped with dual frontal, side chest, side head airbags. It is also IMPORTANT TO NOTE that the Safety Ratings and test results are applicable to the Australian and New Zealand markets ONLY.
