Maruti Suzuki working on new crossover codenamed YFG to replace S-Cross

Written by AnantaSaranNayak

The S-Cross was launched 6 years back in 2015 and since then it has received 2 facelifts. But, as per some rumours Maruti Suzuki is currently working on the next generation of the S-Cross which could be launched in 2023. Let’s be honest and accept the fact that the S-Cross is not selling the numbers that Maruti Suzuki had anticipated. The mid-size SUV segment is dominated by the Korean siblings Creta and Seltos. Maruti Suzuki very well understands the Indian automotive market and to compete with the Korean siblings, the S-Cross has to be loaded with all the high-tech features and a competent automatic drivetrain.

The current generation S-Cross is offered with a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a mild-hybrid system that is mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed torque converter automatic. The engine cranks out 103 BHP of power and 138 Nm of torque taking the car from 0 to 100 kmph in around 12 seconds for the manual transmission. And the main reason why the S-Cross is selling in poor numbers is the lack of a diesel engine and an adept automatic gearbox which its chief rivals are offering.

In fact, in terms of features, the S-Cross misses out on a lot of key equipment like rear AC vents, cooled seats, wireless charging and a sunroof. But it is not all sour, it does get automatic headlights and wipers, a touch infotainment system, reverse camera with parking sensors, climate control, steering mounted audio controls, adjustable back seat and more. The current generation S-Cross has a price tag of INR 8.39 lakhs for the base trim Sigma manual and the price goes all the way up to INR 12.39 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the top-spec Alpha Automatic.

The Creta and Seltos have multiple engine and gearbox options which helps them cater to a wider range of audience. In recent years, it is being noticed that Indians are changing their focus from the manual transmission and opting for the automatic gearbox owing to its convenience and hassle-free drives in the traffic. To give the Korean siblings a run for their money Maruti Suzuki needs to put in all their efforts to load the S-Cross with all the best-in-class features with multiple powertrain options.
