Written by Parichay Malvankar

India’s favorite tall boy hatchback is now 20 years old. With more than 24 lakh cars sold in the last 2 decades, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR is quite a success story in the Indian car market. It has been one of the top 10 selling cars in India for 20 years and it was first launched to the mass market in 1999. The WagonR has always been appreciated for its no nonsense maintenance, massive space on offer and overall practicality. Marurti Suzuki claims that nearly 25% of WagonR customers have bought another WagonR. This means 1 out of 4 WagonR buyers will buy a WagonR again in the near future.

The new generation of WagonR was launched in January 2019. This model has managed to cross the 1 lakh sales milestone in just 7 months since launch, hinting at the strong brand affinity. The WagonR now has already transitioned to BS6 emission norms and rivals the likes of Hyundai Santro.

The latest model of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR is built on the HEARTECT chassis and it meets front offset, side impact and pedestrian crash safety norms. It offers features like parking sensors, airbags, ABS with EBD, seat belt reminder, speed alert warning, etc. as standard. For a feel good factor, the WagonR also comes with a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The K10b motor for the WagonR is a 998cc, 3-cylinder motor producing 50 kW of power and 90 Nm of torque. The same engine with a CNG kit produces 43.5 kW of power and 78 Nm of torque. This engine comes coupled to a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT gearbox and claims a mileage of 21.79 kmpl on petrol manual and AMT and the CNG variant delivers 33.54 km/kg.

The WagonR K12M motor is a 1197cc, 4-cylinder block producing 61 kW of power and 113 Nm of torque matched to a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT gearbox delivering 20.52 kmpl mileage in manual and AMT versions.
