Written by Nizam Shaikh

Maharashtra Cabinet Minister of Tourism and Environment along with the Minister for Industries & Mining has confirmed that the Ministry is in talks with Tesla Inc. Brand Chief – Elon Musk, inviting the electric mobility brand for investment in the state of Maharashtra. The potential investment is in-line with the policy building and changes for sustainable development in Maharashtra and further strengthens the commitment of the state in electric mobility and sustainable technologies.

Recently, other sources reported that the Government of Karnataka is also in preliminary talks with Tesla to set up a research and innovation unit in the city. The principal secretary of Karnataka’s commerce and industries department offered the American brand all the support required to set up the research and development centre as well as the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing unit in the southern state.

The brand could benefit from the electric ecosystem that is steadily developing in the southern state especially in Bengaluru. Technology companies such as Ola Mobility, Ather Energy, Mahindra Electric, Daimler and Bosch have already set up a base near the city, and Tesla could leverage this in the earlier years of business. Apart from the research and development centre, it is also being rumoured that Tesla could set-up a Tesla Gigafactory near Bengaluru, where the brand will be able to manufacture batteries and electric cars.

This is not the first time Elon Musk has shown interest in the Indian market and in the recent past, the Founder of Tesla Inc. was seen replying to a tweet which enquired about the launch timeline for the Tesla 3 in India to which Elon Musk replied with “Sorry, should hopefully be soon!”. The electric mobility company on Twitter also revealed that it could launch an Order Configurator as soon as January 2021 for the Indian market.

In the global market, Tesla sells the Model S, Model 3, Model X and the Model Y.
