Kia EV6 1st Korean car ever to achieve product carbon footprint certification

Written by Nizam Shaikh

Kia Motor Corporation has announced that the EV6 long-range electric crossover has achieved the product carbon footprint certification from Carbon Trust. Furthermore, the Kia has also become the first Korean vehicle manufacturer to receive the ‘Carbon Measured’ label. Carbon Trust is a global climate change and sustainability consultancy. The company has measured the EV6 footprint against internationally recognised PAS2050 Standards. In addition to this, the company also received the Energy Management System (ISO 50001)’ certification from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

What is Carbon Trust?

Carbon Trust is an independent, expert partner that advises businesses on sustainable, low carbon world footprints. The organisation also measures and certifies the environmental footprint of products, supply chains and organisations. The brand has a robust product assessment that is in accordance with PAS2050 Standards.

‘Carbon Measured’ Kia EV6

The total greenhouse gas emission on the Kia EV6 was measured using the same PAS2050 Standards. This is a part of Carbon Trust’s assessment programme. The programme also covers emissions from the extraction of raw materials to the end-of-life to calculate the carbon dioxide equivalents. The ‘Carbon Measured’ label certifies the precision of these computations. The label also provides the customers autonomously evaluated information about the carbon impact of their product.

Kia’s Sustainability Initiatives

Kia has considered all the possibilities to ensure that the EV6 is not just a Zero Tailpipe emission vehicle. But also extensively worked on measuring and reducing the carbon footprint throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle. This includes measuring the carbon footprint from acquiring raw materials, procurement of parts, transportation, vehicle assembly, distribution, use and end-of-life recycling.

Kia EV6 – E-GMP Platform

The Kia EV6 underpins the Hyundai Motor Groups E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform) with an 800V architecture. The platform comes with ultra-fast charging technology and spacious interiors. The EV6 also comes with PET recycled plastics for seat coverings and floor mats, reducing the equivalent of 107 500ml PET bottles.
