Jeep launches new Grand Cherokee SUV in India at INR 77.5 lakh

Written by Kanad Kalasur

Jeep has launched the Grand Cherokee in India. Unlike the last gen Cherokee, the new one will be assembled in India. This makes India the first market after North America where the Grand Cherokee is assembled. The prices of the SUV start from INR 77,50,000 (ex-showroom). The outgoing model was imported as a fully built unit

Design of the Jeep Grand Cherokee

The SUV draws inspiration from the larger Grand Wagoneer. It gets a typical Jeep facade with a 7-slat grille, sleek LED headlamps, large central and side air intakes. Coming to the sides, the two-box design gets a prominent crease in the beltline. It starts all the way ahead from the headlamps to the tail lamps.

At the back, it gets a blacked-out C-pillar that gives the roof a floating effect, slim LED tail maps and a large number plate housing apart from the meaty bumper.

On the inside, the car comes with modern interiors with multiple screens. There is a large 10.1-inch central touchscreen that merges into the AC controls. Thankfully, the AC gets physical buttons unlike many cars that use the touchscreen itself for the same. Another 10.1-inch screen is located in front of the front passenger which can be used exclusively for his/her entertainment.

All materials used consist of plush leather and soft touch materials for the touch areas. The interiors also get leather, wood and gloss black inserts. Seating layout consists of 5-seats, but internationally, the SUV is offered in a 3-row layout.

The driver gets a customizable 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10-inch head up display, wireless charger and more. Rear seat passengers also get entertainment screens, a large panoramic sunroof and more.

The Grand Cherokee also gets ventilated seats for the front occupants and a powered tailgate.

Powertrain of the Jeep Grand Cherokee

This time around, Jeep has offered only the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. It is rated at a maximum power output of 272 HP and a peak torque of 400 Nm. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard. Power is sent to all the four wheels via a low range gearbox as well. The new Grand also gets selectable terrain modes – Auto, Sport, Mud/Sand and Snow.

Competition of the Jeep Grand Cherokee

In terms of competition, the Jeep Grand Cherokee will head up against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5 and the Land Rover Discovery in India.
