Hyundai planning Alcazar CNG variant?

Written by Rohit Tonapi

The South Korean carmakers, Kia and Hyundai, are on a CNG spree. After spy shots surfaced for the Sonet and Carens’ CNG versions, Hyundai’s Alcazar joins them as well. It is the first time the Alcazar is spotted the CNG kit. The Alcazar with a camouflaged rear was seen in Pune. In addition to this, the back of the car also had emission testing equipment. There is a chance that the vehicle could be undergoing homologation testing by the ARAI.

The Hyundai Alcazar is based on Creta’s platform but features an additional seating row. The Alcazar competes with the likes of Tata Safari and MG Hector Plus. For now, when it comes to CNG options in the segment, one is limited to the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga CNG.

Hyundai Alcazar CNG – Expected Powertrain

The Alcazar’s MPV sibling, the Carens, will also soon be available with a CNG option. Both the models share the same diesel engine. However, when it comes to the petrol powertrain, they are different.

The Kia Carens comes with a 1.4-litre T-GDi engine. However, the Alcazar is not available with a turbo-petrol engine. The Alcazar, on the other hand, gets a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine. The naturally-aspirated engine is the only petrol option available with the Alcazar. Hence, the CNG version of the car will use the same engine.

It remains to be seen which transmission option Hyundai will offer with the CNG variant. Currently, the Alcazar comes with a choice of two transmission options – a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic.

Hyundai Alcazar CNG – Expected Variants

Many Indian car manufacturers do not offer their CNG-equipped cars in the top-end variants. However, Hyundai and Kia will most likely change this. The CNG versions of the Kia Carens and Sonet spotted earlier were both top-end variants. Hence, the chances of Hyundai doing the same are high.
