Hyundai AX1 crossover is getting ready for global debut

Written by Nizam Shaikh

Hyundai is gearing up to launch a new crossover AX1 in the international market. The brand is testing the vehicle extensively, and images of the test mule keep coming from its home market. But photographs of a less mule with less camouflage have emerged on the internet. These images lead us to believe that the Hyundai AX1 photographed could be in its production-spec avatar. Recently, Hyundai also released a teaser showing the Hyundai AX1 headlamps and taillamp design.

Design & Styling

The micro-crossover is still under camouflage covers, but camouflage plates that hide the design elements have been removed. This gives us some clarity on the design and styling of the Hyundai AX1 micro-SUV. The car features a prominent mesh grille which gives the micro-crossover butch looks. Flanking the imposing grille are two rounded headlamp clusters with integrated circular daytime running lights in LED. The headlamp could also come with LED lights and projectors in higher-spec variants.

The Hyundai AX1 features sleek LED turn indicators that sit below the bonnet line, a design trait similar to the latest Hyundai SUV family. The images also show a silver skid plate in the front and a flat bonnet design. The AX1 is likely to come with trapezoidal wheel arches with plastic cladding that reinforce its SUV status.

The micro-SUV also gets chunky roof rails, a shark-fin antenna, a tailgate integrated spoiler and high-mount stop lamp etc. The vehicle’s rear features segmented LED lights with a unique light signature and rounded lamps on the bumpers that reverberate with the front end design. The Hyundai AX1 also features alloy wheels with a capsule-like design and wide contact tyres.

Powertrain

Speculation is that the Hyundai AX1 will come with a 1.1-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine. The brand is also likely to offer a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. While there is no official word on it, the brand could also introduce an electric powertrain option on the AX1 micro-SUV.
