Honda Monkey Gets Updated with New Engine & Gearbox

Written by Nizam Shaikh

Honda has introduced the newly updated Monkey in the European market. For 2022, Honda has given the Monkey a thorough update in the engine and suspension department. The quirky motorcycle also comes with new official accessories reverberating with the groovy Monkey of the 1970s. The new Monkey also comes with contemporary electronic features and a new colour theme.

2022 Honda Monkey – Engine Specifications

In the 21st century, a Euro5 emission-compliant 124cc air-cooled four-stroke engine powers the Honda Monkey. The engine pumps out 9.4 Hp of power and 11 Nm of torque. The two-valve SOHC fuel-injected engine draws its architecture from the Honda MSX Grom and comes with a 5-speed gearbox replacing the older 4-speed unit. The extra gear on the motorcycle gives it the ability to cruise longer distances and achieve a top speed of 91 km/h.

The brand has worked on the internal of the engine, which now produces less friction. This translate to higher fuel efficiency, returning 1.5 litres/100km (WMTC mode). The innards now come with an offset cylinder and roller-rocker arm for the valve gear. The brand has also employed a new correcting plate that draws fresh air and feeds an intake duct inlet. Honda also redesigned the airbox and connecting tube to smooth airflow. For Euro5 compliance, the brand also employs a revised catalyser, along with altered downpipe length, which improves performance and sound.

2022 Honda Monkey – Mechanical Changes

The Honda Monkey now comes with a steel backbone frame tuned to deliver a balance between “balance between rigidity and supple feel.” The motorcycle rides on an upside-down front suspension with a premium Alumite finish and 100mm of travel. The Monkey comes with dual shocks that come with two-stage springs and revised damper rubbers on the rear. The rear suspension offers 102mm of rear axle travel and an overall ground clearance of 175mm. The motorcycle comes with 220mm front, and 190mm rear hydraulic disc brakes. The Monkey rides on 12-inch rims shod in 120/80 front and 130/80 rear tyres.

2022 Honda Monkey – Top Features

The 2022 Honda Monkey comes with features such as a historical 3D “Classic Wing” design Honda logo. The Monkey also gets a ‘peanut’ tank, padded seat, mini-ape handlebars, chromed mudguards, upswept exhaust with stamped heat shield and chunky tyres. This connects the latest Monkey to the past. But for the 21st century, the motorcycle features a digital full-LCD circular instruments cluster, all-LED lighting, a ‘wave’ pattern key with an ‘answer back’ system, and a single-channel ABS linked to an IMU mitigates rear ‘lift’ under strong braking, for safety.
