Here’s how Renault’s digital cockpits could look in the future

Written by Akhil Dalvi

French automotive manufacturer Renault has published the interior sketch of its upcoming Austral SUV, the successor of the Kadjar. Renault reveals that the brand will launch the new Austral SUV in the coming weeks. The automaker will reportedly offer an electrified engine lineup for the Austral that will include mild-hybrid and hybrid powertrains. Renault’s new digital cockpit design borrows inspiration from its Megane E-Tech SUV, introduced on 8th September 2021.

Renault’s new interior design details

Based on the recently published design sketches, Renault’s new interior features a digital instrument cluster and a large OpenR infotainment touchscreen. Showcased in portrait format, Renault claims that the 24.3-inch, L-shaped panel is one of the largest screens on the market. The system within the infotainment system features Google Automotive Services, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay connectivity along with Google Maps. Renault has implemented an anti-reflective coating on the screen, eliminating the need for a visor and offering easy access for features.

The design sketch also showcases an all-new, futuristic squared-off steering wheel, slim air vents, red accents, and ambient lighting. Along with a high-mounted centre tunnel, the interior features multiple storage compartments that could fit 30-litres worth of items. With an expected improvement to the overall fit and finish of the cabin, Renault will also provide a sliding armrest. Additionally, Renault’s designer aspired to create a “cocoon effect” for the interior that made passengers feel safe during the drive.

Renault also stated that the interior would feature two storage compartments in the centre console and ergonomic seats for comfort. Other additions include the flecked fabric decks on the roofline, windscreen post, extra soundproofing for passenger convenience, and multiple ADAS features. The automaker has also ensured to eliminate the transmission tunnel and added a sliding/folding rear bench for the rear passenger space. It is unclear if the red highlights throughout the entire cabin space will make it on the production-ready Austral SUV.

Upcoming Renault Austral Details

According to confirmed reports, the upcoming Austral will utilize Renault’s new CMF-CD3 platform and sport a length of 4.51-meters. The automaker will reportedly offer exclusive, electrified petrol powertrains for the Austral, developing 200 PS, and has already begun testing. Multiple spy images on social media showcase Renault testing camouflaged prototypes of the Austral on public roads and streets of Europe.
