FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile), the governing body for the motorsport world has granted a Grade 2 license to the Madras Motor Race Track (MMRT).
A Grade 2 license signifies that MMRT can now host all motorsport events except for Formula 1. Racing events such as DTM, GT Racing, World Endurance Championship, Indycar etc., can now be hosted at MMRT.
With this development, MMRT now plans to revamp the race track with better infrastructure. A new pit-lane and pit-building along with a hospitality and media centre is being planned.
It has taken over 3 years of inspection by FIA for this Grade 2 license approval. Areas improved over these three years include run-off areas, kerbs, armco barriers & a race control room.
