American technology company, Continental has announced that it has achieved a production milestone of 1 million Airbag Control Units in India. Based out of Bangalore, the technology plant began its production of ACUs in 2016 to showcase its commitment to safety. Continental then began adding additional assembly lines in 2019 to fulfil the growing market demand and finally met its achievement.
By localizing its entire value chain from R&D to design and production, Continental aims to fulfil customers’ requirements. Continental’s Bengaluru plant also exports the Airbag Control Units to other Asian regions and caters to other leading Indian OEMs. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the technology company has successfully adapted to the changes and achieved its desired target.
What are Airbag Control Units?
Airbag Control Units (ACU) are the most critical components needed for the ideal functioning and deployment of the airbags. Not only does the device offer restraint control features, but it also supports instant communication with satellite crash sensors. The satellite crash sensors detect and evaluate the crash intensity and focus on occupant safety functions. Based on the modular platform approach, Continental’s ACU product lines are scalable, flexible, and cost-optimized via modular building blocks.
Continental’s ACU product line includes basic functions and sports additional integrated safety features to meet all market requirements. Continental states that the basic version of the ACU supports passive safety functions and fulfils rising demand for cost-effective safety features. These cost-effective safety features which are available in emerging markets include front and side airbags along with seat belt pre-tensioners. The ACU’s modular concept supports additional safety functions such as Vehicle Dynamics Sensing, Rollover Detection, and Event Data Recording.
Current & Future Plans
Continental will continue to commit to its “Vision Zero” philosophy consisting of Zero Fatalities, Zero Injuries, and Zero Crashes. Additionally, Continental has stated that its Technical Center India has built up competencies across domains and an extensive engineering workforce. Currently, the company’s R&D team of the PSS business unit is innovating and adapting to produce sophisticated safety technologies. With this move, Continental aims to provide even more affordable and financial solutions for its investors and customers.
