The Thar recently achieved a key milestone as Mahindra crossed the 1 lakh production milestone. As of now, Thar is available in two broad trim line-ups. These are namely, AX(O) and LX. Customers can have it with two petrol and one diesel engine option spread across them. However, as per recent reports, we believe that Mahindra could introduce a new entry-level 4×4 variant. This trim will sit below the AX(O) trim. Customers will get one engine option to choose from, namely, 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol engines.
Mahindra Thar To Get More Cheaper In Price
In January 2023, Mahindra brought in the new RWD variants of the Thar. The entry-level price got down significantly thus attracting more customers to the brand. But with this upcoming entry-level 4WD variant, which could get the name AX AC. We assume Mahindra might delete some features that are currently offered on the AX(O) trim. This will help to further position the variant more aggressively. Interestingly, Mahindra briefly offered a bare-bones AX trim. But it was axed owing to side-facing bench seats, which did not go well with the crash tests. For the upcoming AX AC trim, however, we believe it will get a four-seating configuration with forward-facing seats.
We understand Mahindra is making this move in response to Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming Jimny SUV. The Jimny will most likely undercut the current prices of the Thar as a lifestyle off-roader. And thus this new trim of the Thar could directly compete with the Jimny.
Mahindra Thar’s Price Details
As of now, Thar’s only direct rival in the segment is the Force Gurkha. But things will heat up fast when we see Jimny come through. Diesel variants of the Thar retail in the price range of INR 9.99 lakh-16.49 lakh. Meanwhile, the petrol versions retail in the price range of INR 13.49 lakh-15.82 lakh. All prices mentioned are in the ex-showroom.
