The BYD Atto 3 electric SUV has secured a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. The car scored 91% in the adult occupant category, 89% for child occupant, 69% for vulnerable road users and 74% for safety assists.
Bookings for the car have now opened in India. Although the tested car is a left-hand drive (LHD) version, the same rating would likely apply to the Indian car.
As per the report by Euro NCAP, the passenger compartment of the Atto 3 remained stable in the frontal offset test. The test dummy demonstrated good protection of the knees and thighs of both the driver and passenger.
In the full-width rigid barrier test, the protection offered to all the critical body areas was good or adequate for both the driver and rear passenger seats. In the side crash test, the protection of all critical body areas was good, and the car scored maximum points. That said, in the side pole impact, protection of the chest was rated as weak for the driver.
The extent to which a person is thrown to the other side of the vehicle when hit from the opposite side was adequate. The Atto 3 is claimed to be equipped with a system to mitigate against occupant-to-occupant injuries in such collisions. The system offered good protection for occupants’ heads. In the event of a crash, the Atto 3 also has an eCall system which alerts the emergency services. The car also applies the brakes after an impact to avoid further secondary collisions.
For the child occupant test, the Atto 3 offered good protection of all critical body areas for both child dummies in the frontal offset test and the side barrier impact. Also, the front passenger airbag can be disabled to accommodate a rearward-facing child seat.
In terms of Safety assists, the Atto 3 gets Lane Support, Speed Limit assistance, Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), and Seatbelt reminders. To read the detailed Euro NCAP report, head over to their website.
