BMW has taken wraps off its next-generation 7-Series luxury sedan. The 7-series is now in its 7th generation. BMW’s flagship sedan gets added tech and a completely new design.
The company says the 7-Series opens up ground-breaking pathways to driving pleasure, unsurpassed long-distance comfort and top-end digital experience. The new 7-Series will exclusively be available worldwide in a long-wheelbase body variant. In addition to this, a high-security version will also join the lineup in 2023.
2022 BMW 7-Series – Design
The new 7-Series features a new headlamp design similar to the new X7. The large kidney grille and the new split-headlights design dominate the front end. In the higher-end variants, it gets new Iconic Glow headlights. The Iconic Glow headlights feature Swarovski crystals in an “L” shape. They serve as the daytime running lights as well as the turn signal indicators and have 14 LED units. When you approach the vehicle, the lights turn on with a “dance”, and accompanying them is the lighting around the kidney grille.
According to the company, the 7-Series gets a monolithic surface design, and the side of the car brims with visual elegance. Furthermore, it gets body flush door handles and flush-fitted side windows with seals that are not visible. A strong shoulder line runs from the DRLs in front to the rear taillights, which accentuates the taut bodywork of the car. The long-wheelbase only 7-Series also gets long doors for easier ingress and egress. At the rear, the new 7-Series loses the light bar from the previous model. Instead, the sedan now uses slim LED taillights that extend into the car’s side flanks.
2022 BMW 7-Series – Powertrain
Along with the new all-electric i7, the 7-Series also gets a new range of ICE engines. However, with the 7th-generation 7-Series, the company will bid farewell to the big V12 engines. Depending on the market, the new lineup will consist of six-cylinder and V8 engines. Like the recently introduced X7, all engines will get mild-hybrid technology.
The range will start with the 735i, which gets a 3.0-litre straight-six with 272 HP and 400 Nm of torque. A more powerful version, 740i, uses the same engine but produces 380 HP and 520 Nm of torque. The diesel variant, 740d xDrive, additionally gets all-wheel-drive as standard. The 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel mill produces 286 HP and 650 Nm of torque.
The 7-Series will also be available with a plug-in hybrid system in the 750e xDrive guise. The 750e xDrive will combine a six-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor. The company claims the car will do around 89 km in pure EV mode. The total output of the car is 490 HP and 700 Nm of torque. BMW will also introduce the first M Performance plug-in hybrid, M760e xDrive. The new M Performance PHEV makes 571 HP and 800 Nm of torque. Both the 750e xDrive and M760e xDrive share an 18.7 kWh usable capacity battery.
2022 BMW 7-Series – Top Features
The new 7-Series is the first production BMW model available with a two-tone Individual paint option. The luxury sedan gets adaptive air suspension as standard and rear-wheel steering. On the inside, large screens and touch controls replace most physical buttons. Above the dashboard, you get a 14.9-inch display that extends into the 12.3-inch instrument cluster. A curved-glass area houses both the displays and tilt towards the driver.
At the rear, literally taking centre stage, is the all-new massive “Theatre Screen”. The 31.3-inch screen folds down from the ceiling. It has an aspect ratio of 32:9 and is 8K in resolution. The screen can play games and videos through the inbuilt Amazon Fire TV.
BMW wants to make sure what you hear is as good as you see. Hence, the 7-Series gets an 18-speaker, 655-Watt surround sound system by Bowers & Wilkins. Additionally, you can upgrade the system to a whopping 36-speaker, 1965-Watt Diamond Surround Sound System.
