The original Innova and Innova Crysta enjoyed massive success in India. Toyota’s proven reliability and the MPV’s comfortable seating made it a huge hit. The company wants to continue its success with the all-new, next-generation Innova. The new Toyota Innova will make hit the market right around the festive season of Diwali this year. However, the Innova will be very different from its predecessors.
The all-new Innova, like the Innova Crysta, will come with a suffix attached to its name. The Innova Crysta will continue to sell alongside the all-new Innova. However, the new Innova will cost less than the Crysta. With the all-new Innova, Toyota wants buyers to see it more as a family car than a commercial proposition.
All-New Toyota Innova – Platform
Underpinning the new Innova will be Toyota’s most popular TNGA-C platform. The platform is also known as GA-C (Global Architecture C). The famous Toyota Corolla uses the same platform as its base. With the use of the new platform, Toyota will also ditch the ladder frame chassis and utilise a monocoque chassis.
According to reports, the MPV could also be loosely based on the 670B sold in Japan. Hence, it will share a lot of bits with the Japan-only MPVs such as the Toyota Voxy and Noah. However, the new Toyota Innova will be very different and distinct from any of its current products. The internal codename for the new Innova is 560B. The 560B will measure roughly 4.7-metres in length, which makes it shorter than the current Innova Crysta. However, using a longer 2,850 mm wheelbase will make it more space-efficient. Additionally, even though the Crysta is wider, the GA-C platform will enable it to have more vertically aligned C-pillars. Thus, providing additional interior space.
All-New Toyota Innova – Powertrain
The new platform also has many advantages when it comes to powertrains. The all-new Toyota Innova will likely use a 2.0-litre hybrid petrol powertrain. The hybrid powertrain could also use an updated version of the Toyota Hybrid System II. Using this powertrain could deliver lower running costs than a diesel engine. The use of the monocoque chassis will also make it lighter by around 170 kg. The lighter weight and more space-efficient construction mean it will likely offer better dynamics. In addition to this, the new hybrid setup is also lighter, more efficient and features a twin-motor setup. The reconfiguration of the setup delivers high levels of efficiency and also an increase in ‘step-off’ torque.
All-New Toyota Innova – Exterior and Interior Changes
To differentiate from the Innova Crysta, the new Innova will have a very distinctive look. The sides of the car will get flatter. When viewing from the rear, the car will look wide, and tall and utilises more vertical space. The front of the car will feature an SUV-like flat nose. As for the headlights, they will have a peeled-back design with a high-mounted grille in the centre. The front will look a bit similar to the Corolla Cross, as it shares the same platform. However, Toyota will make sure to give it an unmistakable Innova identity. Internationally, most of the GA-C platform based MPVs use a sliding door mechanism. However, the all-new Innova spied in India had regular doors.
The interiors will have a similar layout to the GA-C-based MPVs. The features will include connected technology, cooled seats, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and wireless charging. Additionally, the MPV could feature reclining captain seats with an ottoman function, as seen on premium luxury limousines.
