Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV revealed, 3 variants

Written by Rohit Tonapi

Mercedes-Benz has taken the wraps off their all-new EQS SUV. The EQS SUV is the electric sibling to the company’s flagship SUV – GLS-Class. The new SUV is part of Mercedes-Benz’s EQ series of electric cars. It will be available in three variants and support multiple powertrain and battery options.

Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV – Design

The EQS SUV draws inspiration from the brand’s first model in the EQ lineup – the EQC. The car also gets the same smooth-surfaced design as seen with the recent EQE and EQS sedans. Additionally, it features a horizontal LED light bar across the front to provide an unmistakable family resemblance to the other EQ models.

At the front, the blanked-off black panel grille dominates the front. The black panel grille also extends down into the bumper’s lower section. Also optionally available is a star pattern design for the grille. The angular headlights are full-LED and can be opted with the Mercedes-Benz Digital Light. Like the EQS and EQE sedans, the SUV’s clamshell-style bonnet does not open. Hence, things like the windscreen washer filler integrate into the right front panel of the car.

The side of the car features flush-mounted door handles as standard across the range. Unlike the EQS and EQE, the EQS SUV does not get frame-less doors. Optional narrow running boards will be available for better aerodynamic efficiency. They will help smooth the airflow along the side of the car. Although officials suggest it will be the most aerodynamically efficient SUV, the company is yet to announce the drag co-efficient.

Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV – Interiors

The high-set dashboard houses an individual 12.3 digital instrument console and 12.8-inch infotainment display in portrait orientation. Also optional is the Hyperscreen, which measures over 56-inches. Operating the Hyperscreen is an 8-core CPU with 24GB of RAM. The Hyperscreen houses three screens – a 12.3-inch instrument console, a 17.7-inch centre infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch front passenger screen. The EQS SUV also uses the company’s latest MBUX operating system with support for conversational speech. The system also gets OTA updates. A heads-up display with navigation which supports augmented reality is also optional.

The EQS SUV also comes with a 15-speaker surround-sound system by Burmester. The highlight feature of the sound system is the Dolby Atmos support for a 360-degree sound experience. The EQS SUV, like the GLS-Class, can accommodate seven people. However, in the case of the EQS SUV, the third row is optional and not standard.

Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV – Powertrain

The Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV comes in three variants – EQS 450+, EQS 450 4MATIC and the range-topping EQS 580 4MATIC. All the variants get single or multiple Permanently Excited Synchronous Motor (PSM)

The entry-level variant EQS 450+ gets a single motor rear-wheel-drive setup. It produces 355 HP and 568 Nm of torque. The EQS 450 4MATIC gets an additional rear motor which makes it an all-wheel-drive model. The EQS 450 4MATIC puts out the same power but produces 800 Nm of torque.

The range-topping model, EQS 580 4MATIC, has dual motors and all-wheel drive. It produces 536 HP and 858 Nm of torque. As the EQS SUV shares the EVA2 platform with the EQS sedan, it uses the same 107.8kWh battery pack. The range for the models ranges between 507 km to 660km on the WLTP cycle.
