Mahindra has finally revealed the prices of its new 2023 Thar RWD. With this, the Thar now starts at INR 9.99 lakhs (ex-showroom). This is much lower than the earlier starting price of INR 13.59 lakhs for the standard Thar 4×4.
How Could Mahindra Price The Thar So Aggressively?
The reason Mahindra managed to decrease prices in the current market scenario is that this is the 4×2 RWD. The standard Thar gets a 4×4 transmission as standard and offers 2 large engine options. These are namely a 2.2-litre turbo diesel and 2-litre turbo petrol. With the 4×2, Mahindra has now brought in a Rear Wheel Drive transmission setup. Along with that, the Thar now also gets the option of choosing a smaller diesel engine.
The motor in discussion is the same 1.5-litre turbo diesel mill which we see in the XUV300 and Marazzo. This motor makes 117 BHP and 300 Nm of peak torque. In comparison, the 2.2-litre turbo diesel on the Thar dishes out 130 BHP and 300 Nm of max torque. With an under 1.5 litre engine and a length just short of 4 metres, Mahindra gets to leverage the policy benefits of ‘small cars’. This helps in reducing the overall tax implications on the Thar 4×2. All of these factors led to the drop in its entry-level price point (for diesel as a fuel option).
