Tata Motors is gearing up to launch the all-new 6/7-seater SUV in the Indian market which will be dubbed the Tata Gravitas. The Tata Gravitas SUV will be based on the 5-seater Tata Harrier SUV but comes with its own styling at least in the rear that distinguishes it from the 5-seater iteration. A production version of the SUV has been spotted indicating that the Gravitas is going to be launched soon.
The Tata Gravitas was unveiled in the pre-production form at the 15th edition of the Auto Expo 2020 and it was speculated that the brand will launch the SUV close to the 2020 festive season. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown associated with it the date could have been pushed to the next year. Now a production-ready model of the Tata Gravitas SUV has been spotted inside the company’s manufacturing facility sans camouflage, leading us to believe that Tata is getting ready to launch the Gravitas which is expected to take place in early 2021.
The Tata Gravitas is underpinned by the same OMEGA-ARC (Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced – Architecture) that underpins the Tata Harrier but the Gravitas being able to accommodate an extra row of passenger seat measures 64mm longer and 80mm taller than the 5-seater sibling, though both SUVs share the same wheelbase at 2,741mm. The Tata Gravitas also features a stepped-up roof past the B-pillar and a longer rear overhang.
In terms of design and styling, the Gravitas is expected to receive subtle changes on the front bumper, its own unique grille, new design alloy wheels, new colourways to choose from, slightly different rear end with a near-vertical rear windscreen instead of the raked one that we see on the Harrier, its own unique bumper and subtle changes to the taillamp area but major design language remains the same. Reports suggest that the Gravitas will also receive subtle changes to the dashboard layout, interior colours, redesigned upholstery etc.
The Tata Gravitas is expected to be powered by the same 2.0-litre Kryotec four-cylinder diesel engine making 170 PS of power and 350Nm of torque matched to a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox. The Tata Gravitas is expected to compete with the upcoming 7-seater MG Hector Plus that has been announced to make its debut in January 2021, the upcoming 2021 Mahindra XUV500 and the rumoured 7-seater Creta which is also expected to make its debut next year in India.
