Tata Motors bids good bye to JTP performance cars

Written by Nizam Shaikh

Tata Motors has announced that the company has signed an agreement to purchase the 50% shareholding of Jayem Automotives in JT Special Vehicles Pvt. Ltd. (JTSV) and the brand has also informed the stock exchanges regarding the same. Furthermore, Tata has also announced that, upon completion of procedural requirement, JTSV will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Motors.

Tata’s Performance car unit Jayem-Tata Performance known as JTP, which was a 50:50 joint venture between Tata Motors and Jayem Automotives together known as Jayem-Tata Special Vehicles (JTSV) officially shut down effectively from 4th March 2020, raising many questions in the minds of JTP vehicle owners.

The passenger car industry in FY 2019-20 saw a major downtrend in sales with the introduction of new stringent emission laws and compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, impacted the niche category vehicles and both brand’s found it circumspect to discontinue the joint venture.

Under the JTP brand, Tata Motors Ltd. and Jayem Automotives developed performance spec versions of the Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP which were launched in 2018. Both the cars were targeted towards performance car enthusiasts and petrol heads and were available at a relatively affordable price tag and were appreciated for their styling and performance.

When the joint venture was discontinued, it was being speculated that it will be difficult for JTP owners to source around 150 odd spare parts that are not a part of the standard model’s inventory, but Tata Motors has stated that it will be providing all the requisite support and service to customers of Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP cars at its select dealerships.

The highlight of the Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP was its engine, both cars were powered by a BS4 compliant 1.2-litre three-cylinder, turbocharged Revotron petrol engine that produced 114 PS of power and 150 Nm of torque. To put things into perspective the standard version Tiago and Tigor are currently powered by a BS6 emission compliant 1.2-litre three-cylinder, turbocharged Revotron petrol engine that produces 86 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque.

Back in the day, the Tata Tiago JTP and the Tata Tigor JTP were available at the starting price of INR 6.7 lakh ex-showroom, Delhi.
