Yamaha has launched the BSVI compliant version of their popular premium commuter motorcycle, the FZ. Yamaha has launched the bike with a new engine having a 149cc capacity for the FZ-FI & FZS-FI. This is the first product from Yamaha in India to come with a BSVI compliant engine. Yamaha has also taken this opportunity to introduce 2 new colours for the FZS-FI which are – Darknight and Metallic Red. All previous colour options will continue to remain on sale with this BSVI engine.
The new Yamaha FZ-FI & FZS-FI BSVI now have 149cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled, 4-stroke motor producing 12.4 PS of power @ 7250 RPM and 13.6 Nm of torque @ 5500 RPM. The engine has a compression ratio of 9.6:1 and the bike comes paired to a 5-speed gearbox. The bike continues to be offered with a single-channel ABS system and the front and rear wheels get disc brakes. The Yamaha FZ just like the earlier update continues with the contoured seat and a negative backlit LCD speedo console.
Yamaha claims that the pricing is only 2.5% higher than the older bikes, with this BSVI update. The recent iteration of the Yamaha FZ was introduced in January 2019, with ABS being a mandatory feature. The BSVI engines come within a year since that, however the power and torque figures are nothing to write home about.
The Yamaha FZ rivals the likes of Honda CB Hornet and Suzuki Gixxer.
When the Yamaha FZ was first introduced in the market nearly a decade ago, it was positioned as a sporty motorcycle. However, in this tenure, it has been positioned as a premium commuter rather than a sporty 150cc bike as mass market acceptance and demand is such.
