Yamaha first previewed the E01 concept at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2019. Now, the E01 has broken cover in Japan following the introduction of the Yamaha Neo. However, the E01 is a larger electric scooter sitting in the maxi-scooter segment and will be equivalent to the Yamaha NMax 125 ICE-powered scooter. Interestingly, the production-spec Yamaha E01 appears to have retained the design and styling from the concept study and is near identical to what Yamaha displayed back in 2019. Yamaha also announced that the brand would be progressively introducing the E01. The Yamaha E01 will begin real-world proof-of-concept (PoC) testing from July 2022 in Europe, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand.
The Yamaha E01 comes with a futuristic design language based on Yamaha’s Jin-Ki Kanno EV Design concept MOTOROiD. The scooter also draws inspiration from the Yamaha YZF-series sportbikes. The front fascia of the scooter features a charging port, and the headlights are hidden under the apron, similar to the Yamaha YZF R1. The electric scooter also comes with a tall windscreen which will help in wind deflection, and the scooter gets sleek side panels. The electric scooter also comes with an ergonomically designed seat and a sleek floating tail section.
Powering the Yamaha E01 is an 8.1 kW electric motor paired to a fixed (non-removable) battery design. The brand claims that the battery is capable of delivering 104 km of cruising range from a full charge. Customers also get the option of three different charging systems to choose from. More details on the powertrain will arrive closer to the E-scooter’s launch.
Yamaha is targeting the interurban mobility segment for the Yamaha E01. The Yamaha E01 offers performance equivalent to a 50-125cc class gasoline-powered scooter. The scooter will also serve as a PoC model for vehicle sharing operators, local governments, government agencies, etc.
