According to the latest rumours, Yamaha India is working on a new electric scooter. The new electric scooter will most likely use Yamaha’s Neo e-scooter as its base. Currently, the Neo e-scooter is sold in the European and Japanese markets.
Yamaha India showcased the Neo scooters to dealers a few weeks back. However, the interest in them was not what Yamaha expected. Though the dealers liked the styling, they were apprehensive about the low riding range. Hence, there is a chance Yamaha may have dropped the plan to bring them to India.
According to reports, Yamaha India and Yamaha Japan will co-develop the upcoming electric scooter. However, the company will source components from Indian vendors. This means Yamaha Japan & Yamaha India will design and develop the scooter in Japan but manufacture it here. This is most likely to reduce costs.
As the development strategy is at a very early stage, we can expect Yamaha to unveil the new electric scooter sometime in 2024.
Dominating the front look of the Neo e-scooter is a quadrilateral-shaped twin LED headlight at the front. There is also an accent stripe on the front fairing. Yamaha uses the aqua colour for highlights and the lettering of the model. The e-scooter rides on 13-inch wheels with a twin-spoke design. The Yamaha Neo e-scooter is available in two colour options – Milky White and Midnight Black.
The e-scooter uses a removable 50.4V, 19.2Ah lithium-ion battery, which gives a range of 38.5 km. One can extend the range by purchasing a second battery. The battery sits under the seat for easy access. Yamaha says the battery retains a high level of efficiency for up to 1000 cycles or 10,000 km. It also uses the latest Yamaha Integrated Power Unit (YIPU) for maximum efficiency. It also features a hub-mounted air-cooled brushless electric motor. The hub-mounted design does not require any belts or gears. Hence, it ensures smooth riding and quiet operation.
