MG Motor India is gearing up to launch its third pure-electric model, and it’s generating quite a buzz. The upcoming electric vehicle (EV) is based on the Wuling Cloud EV, which is already sold abroad by parent group SAIC. Now, we have confirmation that this compact utility vehicle (CUV) will be introduced in India as the “Windsor EV.”
The Windsor EV will find its place in MG’s lineup just below the ZS EV and above the Comet EV. With an expected price tag under INR 18 lakh, it aims to compete with the Tata Nexon EV and the Mahindra XUV400. Despite its MPV-like shape, the Windsor EV accommodates only five passengers across two rows, making it more akin to a large hatchback.
The Wuling Cloud EV (or Windsor EV) offers two battery pack options abroad:
The powertrain features a front-axle mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor, producing 134 horsepower. However, it’s yet to be confirmed which battery version will be available in the Indian market. MG could introduce both packs so that they have a budget model in the line-up.
MG has been teasing enthusiasts with a video that asks viewers to decipher the name of the upcoming EV using jumbled letters. But the suspense ends soon—MG will officially reveal the car’s name on August 5. However, trademark filings by the manufacturer indicate that it will indeed be called the “Windsor EV.”
The Tata Nexon.ev has been a runaway success in this segment. The Mahindra XUV 400 has been trying to play catch up as well. With the introduction of a new player, the competition will only be heated in this segment. Which is good for buyers as it will mean more offers, deals and price cuts.
