2020 BMW X1 launched at INR 35.90 lakh, world’s cleanest diesel burning SUV

Premium car manufacturer BMW has launched the new facelift BMW X1 at prices starting INR 35.90 lakh ex-showroom, India. The new X1 now comes with BS6 emissions-compliant petrol and diesel engines along with refreshed styling to its exteriors and interiors. The BMW X1 is now offered in three variants – the new SportX, xLine and M Sport. The compact Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) is locally produced at the BMW Group’s manufacturing facility in Chennai.

On the outside, the facelift BMW X1 gets refreshed styling on the front fascia as well as the rear. The significantly larger grille has been redesigned with more angular lines and now comes as a single piece unit. The bumpers have become more aggressive than before and now sport a band-like fog lamp unit instead of a round fog lamp as seen on the previous model. The headlights too get refreshed styling and are now on the lines of the BMW X6. On the rear, the bumper has been reworked with bigger twin exhaust pipes and the wraparound taillights have been revised as well.

On the inside, the facelift BMW X1 features a multilayered dashboard with soft-touch materials, wooden embellishments and double-stitching on the dash. Changes are subtle and the facelift features a new sporty gear select lever, multicolour ambient lighting, illuminated ‘X1’ projection on the entry, and an 8.8-inch centrally mounted island type infotainment system which can be operated via an iDrive rotary controller but also comes with touch functionality. The infotainment system is integrated with wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity. Apart from this the X1 also features wireless smartphone charging, control mounted steering with paddle shifters and cruise control with braking function, analogue driver’s instrumentation, panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable front seats, dual-zone climate control, automatic headlamps and wipers etc.

In the engine department, the BMW X1 comes with BS6 compliant petrol and diesel options. The engine on the BMW X1 sDrive20i is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, TwinPower Turbo that generates 192 hp of power and 280 Nm of torque mated to a 7-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission that can accelerate the car from 0-100 kmph in 7.7 seconds. The BMW X1 sDrive20d is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, TwinPower Turbo diesel engine that makes 190 hp of power and 400 Nm of torque coupled to an 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission The diesel model can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 7.9 seconds. The petrol variant claims a fuel efficiency of 14.82 kmpl and the diesel claims to return 19.62 kmpl of mileage.

The diesel engine reaches BS6 conformity by having a DPF (diesel particulate filter) and an SCR (selective catalyst reduction) unit that claims to be capable of reducing the particulate matter to nearly zero and has nearly 70% less nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission than the defined BS6 limits making it one of the cleanest diesel engines in the world.

The new X1 comes loaded with BMW safety technology and features six airbags, side-impact protection, Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control, Cornering Brake Control, electric parking brake with auto-hold function, crash sensor, Park Distance Control, rear-view camera, ISOFIX child seat anchorage system and other automotive-industry standard features.
